Residency Showcase Hits Record Registration PDF Print E-mail
A record-setting 194 students from six Ohio colleges plus West Virginia University and the University of Michigan attended OSHP’s 6th Annual Residency Showcase, held Saturday, November 7, 2009, at the Crowne Plaza Columbus North. Twenty-five residency sites participated, also a record.

The annual OSHP Residency Showcase provides an opportunity for Ohio residency candidates to visit with residency sites prior to the ASHP Midyear meeting. The Showcase also offers panel discussions designed to meet the differing needs of students in both earlier professional years of school and later years of school.

The Annual Pharmacy Bowl competition pitted teams from six Ohio colleges against each other in a continuation of the Jeopardy-style format academic challenge moderated by Dorcas Letting-Mangira, PharmD of Summa Health System. Erin O’Toole, also from Summa Health System, served as scorekeeper. The University of Toledo was victorious.

Team members included:
NEOUCOP: Tim Church, Joe Dikun, Sarah Welch, Chris Shelby
Ohio Northern University: Kara Meyer, Erica Roddy, Becky Carey, Lindsay McClish
The Ohio State University: Deron Lundy, Matt Saylor, Matt Byrdy, Sara Jordan
University of Cincinnati (defending champion): Holly Lawhorn, Joy Cunningham, Jeremy Hilty, Adam Hampel
University of Findlay: Joe Guidos, Jenny Mason, Hamid Sheikhi, Kelly Podolak
University of Toledo: Kristen Monarch, Kate Cochran, Krystal Ricciardella, Nichole Zvansky

The competition was followed by dual panel discussions for the students. One session featured current residents and was an introduction to residencies for students in their earlier professional years. It was moderated by Nicole Harger and consisted of panelists Erin O’Toole, Courtney Brown, Michelle Musser, and Shawn Fellows.

A second panel consisted of residency preceptors, designed to help students in their later years understand CV pitfalls, interview skills, post-residency opportunities, and tips on navigating ASHP’s Personnel Placement Service and residency showcases. That panel, moderated by Raymond Yost, consisted of Michael Ganio, Kimberly Novak, Dorcas Letting-Mangira, and Alia Daghstani.

Students visited with representatives from the residency sites during the exhibit session. Lexi-Comp, Inc, of Hudson generously provided one-year subscriptions to Lexi-Drugs as well as Lexi-COMPLETE ON-HAND for a door prize, won by Jen Chew of Ohio Northern University.

OSHP President Sam Calabrese and Educational Affairs Director Maria Giannakos expressed their thanks and appreciation to all those who contributed to the noteworthy success of the Showcase. The 2010 Residency Showcase is scheduled for Saturday, November 6, in Columbus.
